Jamaica Estates is a neighborhood in Queens, New York City. This 503 acre neighborhood extends all the way north to Union Turnpike, all the way south to Hillside Avenue, all the way west to Utopia Parkway and Homelawn Street, and all the way east to 188th Street. The Jamaica Estates Company created this neighborhood in the early 1900's, and worked hard to develop the hilly terrain while making sure to preserve some of the trees in the area. Their hard work paid off - decades later, Jamaica Estates is filled with beautiful tree lined streets and some very old trees dating back to the mid 1800's or earlier. One thing unique to Jamaica Estates is its streets. Although most streets in Queens are built on a rectangular grid, streets in Jamaica Estates are built based on topographic lines instead.

Jamaica Estates is home to a large Modern Orthodox Jewish community as well as a large South Asian American community. There are plenty of kosher restaurants and many synagogues in the area in order to cater to the Jewish community, along with several hotels for visitors to the community. For those interested in shopping, Hillside Avenue and Union Turnpike are particularly popular places to visit due to the variety of shops located there.

Most of the housing available in Jamaica Estates consists of single family homes. The few multi-family homes or apartments that do exist are located around Hillside Avenue in the southern part of the neighborhood. Real estate here is expensive - the average home costs over $300,000. But many people are willing to pay the price in order to get into an area that has great local schools, easily accessible transportation, a strong community and lower taxes.

The high price of real estate is partly due to the Jamaica Estates Association which rules the roost around Jamaica Estates. The association is constantly on the lookout for violations of the association's code, which helps keep the area beautiful and maintains the charm of the neighborhood. Many residents of Jamaica Estates also pay for an armed security service, which has helped to tremendously reduce crime in the area.
